Basic Terminology

Understanding the key components of a staircase will help you make more informed decisions throughout your project. Below is a breakdown of common terms used in staircase design and construction.
Stringer
This is the structure/frame of your staircase which supports the entire flight. This either runs along both sides of your flight, or down the centre for a mono stringer design.
Tread
The horizontal surface of each step where you place your foot.
Riser
The upright / face fronting material that sits in-between each tread, and enclose the staircase design.
Nosing
The front edge of a tread. This can be designed to overhang, or sit flush with your riser.
Nosing Detail
The specific profile or shape of the nosing, which can vary depending on the design style.
Landing
A flat platform commonly located between flights when there is a change of direction, or in some designs this may be located at the bottom of the staircase as a feature. These can vary in size and configuration depending on layout.
Winders
A kite shaped or tapered tread, typically used in staircase designs that are in small spaces, and have multiple change of directions. In some cases, this is a legal requirement.
Balusters
Vertical members (slats, bannisters, rods) that support the handrail. They also act as a safety barrier and contribute to the overall style of the staircase.
Handrail
The handhold / grab rail that runs along the staircase, designed for safety and support while ascending or descending.
Wall Rail
The handhold / grab rail that is side fixed to your wall. This is commonly required for staircases that are in-between walls, to provide a continuous legal handhold & safety rail.
Wall Rail Brackets
These are the steel braces that are fixed into your wall structure to support your wall rail. These come in different finishes to cater your design.
Newel Post
A key vertical structural post that anchors the handrail, typically located at the start, end or turns of the staircase.
Newel Post Top
The decorative or finished top of a newel post, often used to enhance the overall design.
Feature Post (Bottom Newel)
A prominent post at the base of the staircase, often designed as a statement element.
Stringer Capping
This runs along the top of your stringer. This may be on the wall stringer, and on the face stringer used as a fixing plate for your balustrade.
Floor Capping / Base Plate
This runs along the floor and creates a fixing plate for your balustrade to fix into.
Well Trim / Fascia
This is a piece of timber that runs along the front/ face side of your void edge (gyprock), typically the same size as your stringer, and is used for balustrade to side fix to.
